Alright, so what would you say if I told you that you could not only go shopping and lose weight too? Sound too goo to be true? Well it isn’t.

This is a technique I picked up about 2 and a half years ago while doing a little research into how weight loss is associated with positive mind thinking. Believe me, it’s interesting stuff. Really it is. And I’ve used this simple strategy to help people get in the best shape of their life for last few years.

Why does it work so well? Because you use pictures, material items, positive thinking, and of course a sound fitness and nutritional regiment to get things done. And if someone is really ready to lose weight, tone up and look good naked, then the mind is where battle starts.

Don’t believe me? Well think about it for a minute. If you’re going to change a habit, say from no physical activity to performing exercise 3 times per week, your mental state better be in a positive frame of mind so you stick to it. Same with nutrition. If you want to change you nutritional habits you have to first change your mindset into one of healthier eating.

In fact, this tactic works so well that even if you’re currently in the middle of your workout program, getting into the right state of mind could help you break that stubborn plateau your in or even get you re-energized.

But let’s say that you’re just starting out, and you want to lose some weight quickly. Maybe your goal is 11, maybe it’s 50 or even 100. Let’s be honest, losing 100 pounds would be such an awesome achievement for anyone.

Now if you’re looking to lose 50 or more pounds it may take a few months. The fastest I’ve seen it done in my fitness boot camp is in about 4 months. So you’re going to need to make sure you stay motivated and excited that you’re moving in the right direction day after day. 

But everyone’s got to start somewhere, so let’s just aim for those first 11 pounds or so. Why? Because you can mentally manage losing 11 pounds.  And that seems much more doable in the short term then 50, 75, or 100 in a longer term.  

Now, being a boot camp instructor and personal trainer, my main goal is to make this process as fun and as mentally engaging as possible.

In order to accomplish this, you have 2 basic action steps:

1. Go shopping: What the heck Troy– I though you were going to help me lose 11 pounds? I am, I am. Stay with me for a moment. Going shopping believe it or not is an important part of the process. Now, let me be clear you can do your shopping at a physical store that you walk into or on the internet in the virtual world. 

Here’s what I want you to do. Find an outfit that you really, really just “got to have or you’ll die”, and find it in the size that you want. But here’s the thing. The size that you purchase it in must be the size that you’ll be wearing when you lose all the weight you want to drop (not just the first 11 pounds).

So, for example. If you want to lose a total of 45 pounds, buy it in the size you’ll be wearing after you’ve lost 45 pounds.

Make sense?

When you get your outfit, I want you to hang it up somewhere at home where you can constantly see it each and every day, like on your bedroom door. If you can’t find the outfit today, instead find a picture of it in a magazine or on the internet. Print or cut it out and post it somewhere where you will see it everyday, like your refrigerator or bathroom mirror.

This is the most important step because it will allow your mind to really concentrate and focus on the end result you’re trying to achieve.

Number 2: Make one simple nutrition change this week. But you have to make sure it’s easy for you to do and make a habit of. 

  1. Are you drinking 2 sodas a day? Cut it down to 1.
  2. Are you skipping breakfast every day? Pledge to yourself that you’ll eat breakfast 3 times per week.
  3. Add a glass of water or an extra piece of fruit to your diet each day.

Take for example those little frozen meals in your grocer’s freezer. I know they make the meal look soooo delicious from the picture on the front of the box. And as you look at the  food lable, you notice that the calories and fat calories are so low that it’s almost too good to be true.

And it is.

Most people look right past the sodium content. And therein lies the trouble. You think your eating something healthy. You see the ads on television saying how healthy it is. Heck, it’s probably got the word “healthy” on the front of the box. But those in the Dream Body Boot Camps nutritional program know differently.

They know that increased sodium equals increased body weight. And that’s not something that we’re about. You see, your body weight can fluxuate 3-5 pounds in any given 24-hour period based on various things like stress, diet, exercise, and the like.

Now this change in weight doesn’t mean your gaining and losing fat. It just means your body can retain that weight in the amount of fluid that it stores. And of course with eating large amounts of salt comes increased fluid retention which, results in… yep, you guessed it,  increased weight gain.

Below you’ll find my 5 top tips for lowering sodium in the course of any of your 24-hour days. Remember, you should never exceed 2300 mg of sodium daily.

  • Avoid processed foods. Consume fresh produce, lean meats, and freshwater fish. Processed and restaurant prepared foods, are extremely high in sodium!
  • Take the salt shaker away. By not using salt when cooking or eating, many people can reduce their sodium intake by a whopping 30%! Go ahead and replace your salt shaker with a pepper mill, rosemary, chili powder, and  garlic powder (not garlic salt). 
  • Consider using a sodium substitute. There are many salt replacements on the market, including magnesium chloride and potassium chlorine. These will provide a similar, although not identical flavor, all without the negative effects of sodium. Use small amounts of these substitutes to start.

  • Drink plenty of fresh water. Water helps the body in many ways, and certainly helps eliminate excess sodium from your body. Can’t stand plain water ? Try adding a slice of lemon.
  • Remove sodium from the surface of foods. For some products this is easy. You can drain canned olives  and then soak them in fresh water, or crumble salt off the surface of pretzels or saltines. Make sure you choose “salt on top” products over those with salt mixed in.

Weight Loss By Fork?!

You know it might sound silly but your fork (or spoon) is the single most important item at the table when you sit down to eat a meal. Why? It’s simple. It’s the most important thing because it’s something that you have complete control over.

Now I know you might be thinking that I’ve gone and lost it, but stay with me here. You’ll see where I’m going.

You may be eating the healthiest meal ever invented on your plate. It’s just sitting there waiting to be eaten. It could be mixed greens and a healthy breast of all natural lean chicken. Or perhaps some mild white fish with a small serving of brown rice.

But hey, let’s be honest. Even these food selections have calories. And like all good things, they must be consumed in moderation. And that’s where your fork comes in. You see, your fork regulates how much food your actually putting into your body.

And that’s the weight loss tip in a nutshell. If you actually are consciously mindful of how you eat you’ll place your fork down onto the table between bites. You’ll take that time to chew and enjoy your chow. This in turn will slow down your eating habits, create a slower dining experience and you’ll realize just how full you really are without overeating.

Did you ever notice how full you feel when you’re around family and friends on a special holiday? Take Thanksgiving for example. You have all those finger food appetizers that you casually graze on while you talk amongst everyone.

Then you sit down at the table for dinner and your just so full. But now you’ve got turkey, potatoes, and a huge green bean casserole staring back at you. The reason that you’re so full before the holiday meal is that you took your time to mingle while snacking. Your body is letting you know it doesn’t need another meal to feel satisfied.

If you make a conscious effort to pay attention to that fork of yours with each and every meal, you’ll quickly see real results.
